About us

Seascape Analytics was founded in 2013 to provide expert advice and ecological assessments for the United States’ pioneering marine spatial plans and ecological assessments to inform effective management of National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries. We now provide expert advice and technical products for effective design and implementation of nature-based solutions worldwide.
The scientific contributions of our Director, Dr Simon Pittman, have gained Seascape Analytics an international reputation as innovators in the application of holistic science and geospatial technologies that address complex marine and coastal challenges.
We collaborate with a global network of scientists, analysts and data providers. We pride ourselves on very high-quality science and effective translation of complex information to deliver products with operational relevance for our clients. I have enjoyed living and working in the USA, Australia, the Caribbean, and the UK and have also led projects in the UAE, Kenya and the Seychelles. Most of our work at Seascape has been for governments and nature conservation charities where we have provided key technical expertise to design and implement coastal nature-based solutions projects involving identifying sites for restoration, designing protected areas and spatial planning scenarios, assessing ecosystem services and mapping threats to biodiversity.

For a global leader in the maritime sector, we have recently developed an ambitious industry-leading Ocean Strategy and Blue Carbon Ecosystem Strategy.
Previously, I worked with NOAA as a consultant for 13 years providing cross-disciplinary science and decision support tools to government agencies, conservation NGOs and community groups. During this time, my work contributed technical guidance to the first state-wide marine spatial plans in the USA including planning for offshore renewable energy operations. My work has also contributed to blue urbanism with the concept of City Marine Parks and Ocean Cities which are community-led initiatives for coastal cities to address multiple sustainable development goals. My contributions to marine science are featured in a dedicated seascape ecology website here.
As well as being an entrepreneur and conservationist, I enjoy academic research and teaching. Since 2019, I have been an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Oxford where I have led a graduate course on Marine Ecosystems and mentored researchers in the Seascape Ecology Lab. I have a strong belief in public service, and volunteer my expertise to the Executive Committee of the IUCN Working Group on Marine Connectivity and the Science Council of Blue Parks and serve as an editor and reviewer for international journals. I have authored and co-authored more than 100 publications on subjects that inform sustainable and regenerative actions, biodiversity conservation and restoration design, mostly in tropical coastal ecosystems.

People are connected to the Ocean through diverse experiences and values and we have a special responsibility for safeguarding Ocean. Understanding how people relate to Ocean and coastal ecosystems is central to successful nature-based solutions and often undervalued and underestimated.

My work with Seascape Analytics focuses on nature connections with special focus on human well-being and the therapeutic value of coastal seascapes.

I have substantial experience in social change and institutional management gained through leading a national charity, advised government on health policy, and managed various community projects focused on women. I am also a teacher and a practicing psychotherapist with more than 25 years of experience with complex and relational trauma and ecotherapy. I studied Ecology and Spirituality at Schumacher College in the UK and have explored the psychological and spiritual issues connected to place and environmental change.
